In March 2014, it was announced that Salford City were going to be taken over by a group consisting of former Manchester United players Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes.
Salford City were founded in 1940 as Salford Central Mission, named after a Salford church of the same name where the club was founded.
They mainly competed in local leagues in their early years. In 1963, they were promoted to the Manchester Football League and changed the club name to Salford Amateurs.
Salford would adopt their current name of 'Salford City' in 1989.

How are Salford City doing at the moment?
In 2019, they were promoted to the Football League after beating AFC Fylde in the National League Play Off Final at Wembley Stadium.
In their first season in the English Football League, Salford finished 11th and reached the EFL Trophy in a season impacted severely by the Covid-19 pandemic.
