The Ballon d'Or is an annual football award presented by French news magazine France Football. It is seen as the most prestigious individual award for football players.

Who is the current holder of the Ballon D’Or?

Lionel Messi is the current holder of the award, having won it in 2019. The award and ceremony has since been cancelled for 2020. 

Some notable winners from the past.

Stanley Matthews – 1956

The Blackpool legend was the inaugural winner of the award in 1956.  

Denis Law – 1964

The first King of the Stretford End won the award after scoring 46 goals for Manchester United during the 1963/1964 season. 

George Best – 1968

Best won the award after playing a huge in Man United becoming the first English side to win the European Cup in 1968.

Johan Cruyff – 1971

This was Johan Cruyff’s first award. 

Zinedine Zidane – 1998

The legendary French midfielder was integral for Juventus and France in 1998, helping his club win Serie A and reach a 3rd successive Champions League final alongside a World Cup win with France. 

Fabio Cannavaro – 2006

The last defender to win the award. He finished ahead of Gianluigi Buffon and Thierry Henry. 

Cristiano Ronaldo – 2008

This was Ronaldo’s first award. Then at Man United, the Portuguese star had just helped his side win a Premier League and Champions League double. Ronaldo would go on to win the award on four more occasions during his time with Real Madrid. 

Lionel Messi – 2009

This was Messi’s first award. He had just won the Champions League with Barcelona, after beating Man United in the final.
